David Blue (1941-1982)

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, singer/songwriter David Blue had seven
albums released by labels such as Elektra, Reprise and Asylum. None
of them sold especially well, and Blue was often disparaged -- by the few who were even aware of him -- as just another Bob Dylan imitator. (A friend of Dylan's, Blue performed in the legendary Rolling Thunder Revue, and appeared in Dylan's 1975 film "Renaldo And Clara".) But while David Blue, like many (most ??) singer/songwriters in the 1960s, was no doubt heavily influenced by Dylan at first, he soon followed his own course and forged a more original sound. And while a technically limited vocalist in certain ways, Blue used his world-weary voice and understated style very effectively in putting across his thoughtful and
very personal songs. More than 20 years after Blue's untimely death -- he died while jogging in New York's Washington Square Park, and his body was unclaimed in a hospital morgue for several days -- the music
of this under-appreciated artist has stood the test of time quite well.
